Secretary's Day

Administrative Professionals (Secretary's) Day

When :
Administrative Professional's Day: April 21, 2010
Administrative Professional's Week is celebrated:: April 18-24, 2010

National Professional Secretaries Week and National Secretary's Day was created in 1952 through the work of Harry F. Klemfuss of Young and Rubicam. Klemfuss recognized the importance and value of the position to a company or business. His goal was to encourage more women to become secretaries. Using his skill and experience in public relations, Klemfuss, promoted the values and importance of the job of secretaries. In doing so, he also created the holiday in recognition of the importance of secretaries.

Today, the title is changing and evolving. But, the recognition is equally important. There are two new terms in use today. They are "Administrative Professionals" and "Executive Admins". The two names sometimes mean different roles and responsibilities to different companies. Both are broader terms, that encompass more positions than the original "Secretary" role.

The name change recognizes and acknowledges that the role has changed significantly since 1952, and for the better at that. And in Harry Klemfuss' day, these postions were the realm of women. Today, you find some males in these positions.

Administrative Professionals Day gifts are by far the most common way of giving recognition to these most imprtant people on your staff. What is the top gift?..... Giving flowers. Maybe, before you forget, you should send flowers now!

Make Sure Your "Local" Florist Is Local

Not all "local" florists are local. Some out-of-state telemarketing and online firms pose as local florists. These companies mislead consumers into feeling they are ordering flowers from a local florist, but without their knowledge, are being call-remote forwarded to another state. These firms charge higher fees and take business away from legitimate local florists. Consumers are deceived into thinking they are doing business with a local company when they're not. That's unethical and unfair.

To make sure you are doing business with a local professional florist, just follow these tips from the Federal Trade Commission:

Ask neighbors, family, friends, and co-workers for florist recommendations.

Deal only with shops that list a street address with their phone number. If you're asking directory assistance for a number, also ask for the street number and address. If there isn't one, consider doing business with another florist.

Ask the florist for directions to the shop. If they hesitate or refuse, consider this a red flag, and avoid doing business with the florist

Sunny Sunflowers

Sunflowers are one of the most requested items for flower shops in the summer. These beautiful flowers are among the oldest to be grown in North America and have a wonderful history in our country.
Native Americans used Sunflowerws for food and oil, and often used the seeds to feed their livestock. Today we continue to use sunflower seeds to make oil and also as a form of a snack for both humans and birds. The plentiful supply of sunflower seeds can be attributed to the fact that each flower head consists of about 1,000 to 2,000 seeds.
The popularity of Sunflowers comes from their reputation of being one of the fastest growing plants. Within a six month time span they can reach between 8 and 12 feet. The tallest recorded Sunflower was actually grown in The Netherlands. The Sunflower grew to an astonishing size of 25 feet and 5.5 inches.
The scientific name of sunflowers is Helianthus, Helia for sun and Anthus for flower. This name comes from the sunflowers well known characteristic of following the sun’s movement. This phenomenon is called heliotropism and is the main reason the flower received its name.

Watering of House Plants

We are often asked "how often should I water this plant. Is once a week enough?"

Without wanting to sound like we are trying to be funny, the correct answer is "when it needs it".
The trick is to determine when that is. Temperature and humidity are among the factors that affects evaporation, and how root-bound the plant is somewhat controls how much water the soil can absorb.

So how do you know when it's time to water?

The easiest and quickest way is to examine the soil on top of the container. Is the soil cool and slightly moist (not wet)? That's perfect! No need to do anything yet.

If the soil is dry to the touch, check down an inch into the soil. If the soil is dry, it is time to water. If the container has drainage hole in the bottom, water thoroughly and allow the pot to drain. If there are no drainage holes water a little at a time until the soil is evenly moist.

Also watch the plant itself. You will begin to learn from just looking at the plant is the soil is too dry and it is beginning to wilt. Hopefully this doesn't happen too often, as it does affect the health of the plant.

Happy growing.

Giving Flowers to Men

Men love to get flowers for the same reason they send them - to be recognized. Everyone likes to feel special.

A good indicator of when it might be appropriate to send flowers would be to consider his favorite occasions for sending them. Does he send flowers for birthdays, or perhaps as a thank you? Don't forget that no reason is often the best reason!

Just as women love receiving flowers for no reason at all, a surprise floral gift will surely catch his attention too.

The Best Designs and Colors for Men

Men are stimulated by color and are visually oriented. Research shows that men prefer vivid colors such as yellow, orange and red.

Flower arrangements that are contemporary, linear styles or natural styles are best. Other favorites might include green or flowering plants.

Tell your florist that you want flowers for a man and ask for specific suggestions. If your recipient has a hobby, perhaps you could highlight that. For example, if he is a golfer, tuck in a box of golf balls. If he is into cars, add an auto magazine or two. Your florist can offer creative suggestions for flowers that are sure to please.
